Week 2 - Music Journalism Techniques - Essential Skills

What kind of skills do you think a music journalist needs? Do you have them?

Firstly lets find out who you are. Do the personality test HERE

Then, with your four-letter rating - go HERE to read your own personality profile. If you've done the test properly it should be accurate - don't be annoyed by the suggested jobs!

Also if you're curious, you could go HERE or HERE to  find out  + what famous people you share a personality profile with. Don't be upset if you share a personality profile with Hitler.

Finally, you're going to write me a blogpost about you, music journalism and what skills you'll need to develop in the following way. The notes you've made during my waffling will be useful.

1. Open up a new blogpost. Give it the title 'Music Journalism Techniques Week 2: Essential Skills'

2. Insert the heading 'The Skills I Have'

2. Tell me what personality type you have. What does this mean in terms of the skills/attributes you have? You can bullet point those you think are important - make sure you give me both the positive AND negative aspects of the profile.

3. Can you add notes to those positives & negatives - which might be useful in music journalism? Which might hamper you?

4. Insert a heading 'The Skills I Need'

4. Open up a subheading Hard Skills and then tell me in your own words why each of the following would be important for anyone involved in music journalism. Can you also tell me for each one what KIND of writing each skill would be useful for (reviews/news stories/interviews or features) and why?

5. Open up another subheading Soft Skills  and then tell me in your own words why each of the following would be important for anyone involved in music journalism. Week 1 - Setting Up Your Blogs

Because much of your work for me this year is written, I would like you to get used to blogging as a form of work. Blogs are replacing portfolios in terms of getting yourself read and heard - simply an online space in which you can write articles or 'posts'. These posts can contain imagery and enable the embedding of video and audio links as well. You'll be able, via blogs, to not just complete some of the work I need to assess for you to gain your qualification but also add any of your own posts about things you've seen or are into. Over the course of the year I'd like you to also spend time making them look good and suitable for what it is you have to say. Crucially blogging means you won't end up with a big messy harddrive full of indeterminate files with indecipherable names. For you and me it'll be easier to know that all your work is gettable and editable online. Google-docs is also going to be useful this year. A google account is essential so ...
